Caitlin Aldcorn

As a designer, I enjoy the infinite options I have in front of me. Craft offers a way to distribute my voice, ideas, and sense of self and also offers others an outlet in which to exhibit a piece of them. I like to incorporate emotion into my work and an air of femininity. When creating things that are fun and quirky, elegant and refined, or rough and strong, I let feeling and emotion influence the design, material and construction.

I often select my material by exploring the sentiment that I want the piece to encompass. Often, for more fun and modern pieces I’ll choose a light wood like ash or maple, something that isn’t overpowering or restraining, something that is light and airy. When I’m creating a more serious piece I’ll choose something rich, dark and captivating.

Currently, I have been focussing on looking back at furniture throughout history. Exploring what was successful, what wasn’t and why or why not. By adding a modern edge I’m hoping to recreate lasting pieces of furniture paying homage to those who have paved my way throughout the years.
